Established since 1968, Faculty of Social and Political Science (Fakultas Ilmu Sosial dan Politik or FISIP) Universitas Indonesia is one of the faculties with most students and study programs in campus. Up until end of 2014, FISIP UI has 34 study programs with 227 lecturers, and 6.230 students (per 2nd semester of 2014/2015) within eight departments, which is; (1) Department of Communication Studies; (2) Department of Political Science; (3) Department of Public Administration (who has split itself as Faculty of Public Administration since March 2015); (4) Department of Criminology; (5) Department of Sociology; (6) Department of Social Welfare; (7) Department of Anthropology; and (8) Department of International Relation.

Institutionally, FISIP UI used to be a part of state-owned legal entities (Badan Hukum Milik Negara or BHMN) of Universitas Indonesia. In 2001, UI was appointed as BHMN through PP no. 152, that made UI entitled to autonomous management from the government. With that status, UI manages its own household budget, which is reinforced in a decision by Board of Trustee (Majelis Wali Amanat or MWA) Universitas Indonesia year 2003 through Decree No. 01/SK/MWA-UI/2003. This decision was carried based on the legitimation of Act no. 12 year 2012 about Higher Education by The Ministry of Education. According to that law, UI along with six other BHMN was changed to Legal Entity State University (Perguruan Tinggi Negeri Berbadan Hukum or PTN BH).

Through Decree No.405/SK/R/UI/2008 regarding the discharge of former Dean and the appointment of Dean of FISIP UI for the period of 2013-2017, Rector of UI assigned Dr. Arie Setiabudi Soesilo, M. Sc as Dean of FISIP UI. Along with him, the Vice Dean of Education, Research and Student Affairs, the Vice Dean of Human Resources and Venture and some members of the management were also appointed. The directors of FISIP UI are trying to start a transformation for the next four years towards an autonomous, independent (non-subsidized) and professional institution.

System: Organizational Structure, Coordination and Work Conduct

Based on the autonomous status of PTN BH, FISIP UI aims to create a virtuous transformation to achieve the following goals:

  4. Productivity and service of excellence towards academic community and the general public.

The faculty is led by a Dean, along with his/her Board of Directors; Vice Dean who manages academic and non-academic affairs; Head of Academic Quality Control Unit, Data and Accreditation; Head of Director and Staff Secretariat Unit; and staffs who manage and run all staff assistance affairs including internationalization, institutional coordination, development of information and communication technology and external collaboration.
