FISIP UI and Korea Foundation Hold Public Seminar “Shaping the Future: Indonesia-Korea Relations After the 2024 Election”

  • FISIP UI and Korea Foundation Jakarta are working together again to hold a public seminar entitled “Shaping the Future: Indonesia-Korea Relations After the 2024 Election”
  • After the collaboration 2 years ago, FISIP UI together with the Korea Foundation formed the Korea-Indonesia Connection (KIC) FISIP UI
  • Korea-Indonesia Connection (KIC) FISIP UI will again host a number of similar events with the Korea Foundation Jakarta until the end of 2024.



Depok, 29 May 2024  – After commemorating 50 years of cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea in 2023, FISIP UI and the Korea Foundation Jakarta held a public seminar entitled “Shaping the Future: Indonesia-Korea Relations After the 2024 Election”. This seminar was attended by the Director of the Korea Foundation, the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and The Habibie Center. The event took place on May 29 2024 at the Mochtar Riady Auditorium, FISIP UI.

This conference was opened with an opening speech from the Dean of FISIP, University of Indonesia (Prof. Dr. Semiarto Aji Purwanto). Meanwhile, in this opening, the Dean of FISIP UI conveyed the continued collaboration between FISIP UI and the Korea Foundation Jakarta through the formation of the FISIP UI KIC, and hopes to continue to play a role in strengthening relations between Indonesia and South Korea in the future. After that, the event continued with the main seminar session facilitated by several speakers. Present as Keynote Speaker was Prof. Choi Kyung Hee as HK Research Professor from Seoul National University (SNU) Asia Research. She presented material entitled “The Political Economic Implications of New Capital Relocation: Focusing on Sejong of Korea and IKN of Indonesia”. This session mainly discussed plans to move Indonesia’s capital to IKN, similar to South Korea’s move to move its capital to the city of Sejong in 2005.

The session was then followed by Baskara Pradipta M.A. as the representative from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who provided an overview of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and South Korea. Meanwhile the next speaker, Mohammad Hasan Ansori as Director of the Habibie Center, discussed “Projecting Indonesia-Korea Relations in the Post 2024 Election”. The session mainly provided a statistical overview regarding bilateral and cultural relations between South Korea and Indonesia. After that, a session by lecturer from the Department of Political Science, FISIP UI, Mr. Muhammad Imam, M.I.A., who gave a comparative political analysis of Korean and Indonesian democracy. The speaker session was concluded with a session from Cornelia Ingrid, as an alumni of FISIP UI and IISMA Awardee at Yonsei University, who discussed the latest socio-cultural issues in Korea and Indonesia. After all sessions from the speakers, the event continued with a discussion and question and answer session which further enriched the discussion related to the seminar topic presented.

This seminar is not the first collaboration between Korea Foundation Jakarta and FISIP UI. Similar cooperation has also been carried out in 2023, by holding an international conference in commemoration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and South Korea. “Korea Foundation Jakarta and FISIP UI have built a strong and great relationship for the past 2 years with the series of academic seminars and the opening of Korea-Indonesia Center at FISIP UI this year. ”, said Choi Hyun-Soo as the director of Korea Foundation Jakarta.

This seminar event was presented by the Korea-Indonesia Connection (KIC) FISIP UI, which was formed as a form of commitment from FISIP UI and the Korea Foundation to continue to strengthen academic relations between Indonesia and South Korea. Dean of FISIP UI, Prof. Dr. Semiarto Aji Purwanto, conveyed, “Inisiatif ini merupakan bukti komitmen teguh kami untuk memperkuat hubungan Indonesia-Korea, yang mencerminkan visi bersama kami untuk masa depan yang dibangun berdasarkan keunggulan akademik, pertukaran budaya, dan penelitian kolaboratif.” Meanwhile, Choi Hyun-Soo as the Director of Korea Foundation Jakarta commented, “Korea Foundation Jakarta hopes that Korea-Indonesia Center will be a platform that can help to gather resources for students and people who are interested in Korea-Indonesia relationship, and broaden the cooperation landscape of Indonesia and Korea even further.”

Not only this public seminar, as part of 2024 agenda series, KIC FISIP UI and the Korea Foundation Jakarta will present a number of academic events related to Korea-Indonesia relations. KIC FISIP UI also welcomes other entities to play an active role in strengthening academic, cultural and diplomatic relations between Indonesia and South Korea. “The establishment of KIC FISIP UI represents our commitment to strengthening the bilateral relations that have been firmly established. KIC FISIP UI will continue to develop innovative and collaborative programs involving students, scholars, practitioners, and the general public. We believe that KIC FISIP UI can become a strategic platform to build constructive and sustainable dialogue that contributes to strengthen diplomatic, academic, and socio-cultural relations that are beneficial to both countries”, said Getar Hati, the KIC FISIP UI Coordinator.
