- KIC FISIP UI holds World Population Day conference
- The conference presents essays from the correlated call for essay in the same topic, open for university students
- The conference covers four different panels/angles in discussing issues related to population
Depok, 16-17 July 2024 – In commemoration of the world population day on 11 July, FISIP UI and the Korea Foundation Jakarta held an academic conference titled “World Population Day: Advancing Future Generations in Indonesia and Korea”. This seminar was attended by the Director of the Korea Foundation and the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. The event took place on July 16-17, 2024 at the Mochtar Riady Auditorium, FISIP UI.
To date, the earth’s population has surpassed 8 billion people. Growing population brings great opportunities for economic growth. On the other hand, it also greatly impacts humans’ well-being and their impact on the environment. The commemoration of the World Population Day on July 11th helps to raise awareness and find solutions on population issues around the world. Getar Hati as the KIC FISIP UI Coordinator commented, “The issue of population extends beyond mere numbers, it is crucial to discuss population since it encompasses all aspects of life including people’s well-being, health, environment, mobility and human interaction, and so on. Recognizing the importance of these interconnected aspects, KIC FISIP UI invites scholars and students from universities across Indonesia and abroad to engage in meaningful dialogues and share their ideas in commemoration of the World Population Day. This initiative seeks to generate innovative solutions for Indonesia, Korea, and the world.”
This conference was a continuation from KIC FISIP UI’s most recent agenda, where a call for essays was held from mid June to early July. The call was open for active students from any universities and study levels with interest in Indonesia-Korea relation that corresponds to 4 different sub-topics, health & well-being, population & environment, economic & social welfare, and anti-discrimination & equality. Over 20 essays were selected to be presented at the conference, involving students from multiple different backgrounds and universities, including Universitas Indonesia, Dong-A University, Australia National University, and more. The first day of the conference commenced with an opening speech from the Dean of FISIP, University of Indonesia (Prof. Dr. Semiarto Aji Purwanto). The event continued with an opening session with two speakers. Present as the first speaker was Shofwan Al Banna C., Ph.D. as lecturer at the Department of International Relations, FISIP, Universitas Indonesia. He presented material titled “Demography is Destiny? Population and Other Trends to Prepare For”. The session then continued to the second speaker, Gangsim Eom, MSc. MA. as PhD candidate in Anthropology from Harvard University and visiting scholar in Universitas Indonesia. She presented her material titled “Beyond the Golden Anniversary: Transnational Migration and Socio-cultural Exchanges between Indonesia and South Korea”. The session was then followed by the first panel in Health & Well-being with the topic “Bridging Health Issues and Cultivating Well-Being in Indonesia and Korea”, moderated by dr. Yoslien Sopamena, M.K.M. as lecturer at the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia
The conference then continued onto the second day, where the remaining 3 panels commenced. The second panel in Population and Environment brought the topic of “Population Dynamics and Environmental Concerns in Indonesia and Korea”, moderated by Dr. Sofyan Cholid, M.Si. as lecturer at the Department of Social Welfare, Universitas Indonesia. The third panel in Economic and Social Welfare with the topic “Aligning Economic Growth and Mutual Prosperity in Indonesia and Korea”, moderated by Dr. Sari Viciawati M., M.Si as lecturer at the Department of Social Welfare, Universitas Indonesia. Lastly the fourth panel in Anti-Discrimination and Equality brought the topic of “Breaking Barriers and Promoting Equality in Indonesia and Korea”. Chairun Nisya, M.Si., lecturer at the Department of International Relations, Universitas Indonesia, gave comment as the moderator for Anti-Discrimination and Equality panel, “It is refreshing to hear ideas from the young scholars about issues that really mattered and do not have enough discussion on like the anti-discrimination and equality issues. The conference was an amazing space for an inclusive discussion and I think more if such events will do us lots of good.”
Out of 27 presenters that were selected to present in the conference, the committee selected 4 best presenters of each panel, and 1 best presenter from overall. The awarded winners include students from Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and Jayabaya University.
This conference was presented by the Korea-Indonesia Connection (KIC) FISIP UI, which was formed as a form of commitment from FISIP UI and the Korea Foundation to continue to strengthen academic relations between Indonesia and South Korea. Dean of FISIP UI, Prof. Dr. Semiarto Aji Purwanto, conveyed, “This initiative is a testament to our steadfast commitment to strengthening Indonesia-Korea relations, reflecting our shared vision for a future built on academic excellence, cultural exchange and collaborative research.” Meanwhile, Choi Hyun-Soo as the Director of Korea Foundation Jakarta commented, “Korea Foundation Jakarta hopes that Korea-Indonesia Center will be a platform that can help to gather resources for students and people who are interested in Korea-Indonesia relationship, and broaden the cooperation landscape of Indonesia and Korea even further.”
