Born in Rembang, January 4th 1975,
H. Yaqut Cholil Qoumas is the Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, serving from 2020 to 2024. He finished his undergraduate education at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Indonesia.
After finishing his studies at UI, in 2005, Yaqut entered the world of politics and was elected to the Rembang Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) from the National Awakening Party (PKB), and was later elected as Deputy Regent of Rembang for the 2005-2010 period. Furthermore, he also became a member of the National House of Representatives (DPR RI) for the 2015-2019 period as an Intertemporal Substitute (PAW), replacing Hanif Dhakiri who was appointed as the Indonesian Minister of Labor during that period.
Yaqut was re-elected as a Member of the House of Representatives for the 2019-2024 period, serving in Commission II which covered the fields of Domestic Government and Regional Autonomy, State Apparatus and Bureaucratic Reform, Elections, and Land and Agrarian Reform. In addition to his political activities, Yaqut was also Chair of Central Leadership of the 2011-2016 Ansor Youth Movement. At the 15th Congress at Pandanaran Islamic Boarding School, Yogyakarta, he was also entrusted with the position as General Chair of the Ansor Youth Movement from 2015 to 2020
Yaqut was inaugurated as Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia on 12/23/2020. The President of the Republic of Indonesia views him as a Muslim figure who is expected to carry out the responsibility of creating a peaceful and prosperous interfaith life.
