Yuri Octavian Thamrin is a senior Indonesian diplomat with more than 30 years of experience representing his country, both in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. Born in Jambi, October 31st 1961, in 2016 he was appointed by Jokowi to represent Indonesia as the Indonesian Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union for the 2016-2020 period.
He completed his education at Universitas Indonesia (UI), majoring in International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, class of 1979. He later continued his education at the Australian National University and obtained a Master of Arts in International Relations.
Yuri Octavian Thamrin hisself is not new to the world of diplomacy. Previously, Yuri represented Indonesia in many international forums for security diplomacy or international arms control at the United Nations headquarters in New York from 2000 to 2003.
In addition, Yuri O. Thamrin also represented Indonesia as the Leader of the APEC Senior Office Meeting (SOM), when former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono chaired APEC in 2013. He also played an important role as chairman of the SOM and made substantive preparations for the summit chaired by President Joko Widodo commemorating 60 years of the Asian-African Conference in April 2015.
In the context of diplomacy throughout the Indian Ocean Rim, Yuri O. Thamrin also made an important contribution when he led the SOM preparations for the IORA Ministerial Meeting in Padang, Indonesia in October 2015. This Ministerial Meeting then endorsed the idea of holding the first IORA. Summit for the 20th anniversary of the IORA, leading to the adoption of The Jakarta Concord on the Indian Ocean Rim Association: Promoting Regional Cooperation for a Peaceful, Stable and Prosperous Indian Ocean in 2016.
At the end of his term of office, Yuri Octavian Thamrin claimed to have always applied the message of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, who expected all heads of representatives to become marketers with an emphasis on down-to-earth economic diplomacy and the benefits of the people.
This was conveyed by the Indonesian Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union Yuri Octavian Thamrin when he was approaching his retirement from carrying out official state duties.
